Sludge Plus celebrates a major milestone as Dr. Waleed H. Sufe receives the Global Prize for Innovation in Water for advancing sustainable sludge treatment and circular water solutions.
Innovation in water and wastewater management is essential for building a more sustainable future. One of the major challenges faced by modern wastewater systems is how to handle sludge — a byproduct that is often treated as waste and transported to landfills at high environmental and economic cost.
We are proud to share that Waleed H. Sufe, PhD, has been recognized as the winner of the “Sustainable Water Production and Environmental Conservation” track of the Global Prize for Innovation in Water (GPIW). This recognition highlights a growing global commitment to transforming wastewater byproducts into valuable resources.
At Sludge Plus, our vision has always been clear: sludge should not mark the end of the treatment process — it should mark the beginning of a new value chain. Instead of viewing sludge as a disposal problem, we approach it as a resource that can be recovered, processed, and reintegrated into productive use.
Through our research and development arm, GP Tech, we have developed a zero-waste sludge treatment approach that focuses on transforming residual sludge into reusable materials and products. By integrating chemical, mechanical, and physical processes, the technology reduces the environmental burden associated with sludge disposal while enabling practical and scalable circular economy solutions.
Sludge Plus technology is designed to address key challenges faced by wastewater utilities, including high disposal costs, environmental risks, and inefficient treatment methods. By converting sludge into valuable outputs and recovering treated water, the system supports more sustainable wastewater infrastructure while reducing reliance on landfills.
This recognition from the Global Prize for Innovation in Water (GPIW) reinforces our commitment to rethinking sludge management and advancing long-term environmental resilience through circular water practices.
